HOW REKEYING WORKS

  1. Call or Request Online

Tell us how many locks, the brands if you know them, and whether you want them keyed alike. We confirm parts availability before dispatch.

  2. Technician Arrives

Your nearest licensed technician arrives with rekeying kits for Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, and most standard residential keyways. Median Central Austin arrival: 14 minutes.

  3. Cylinder Removed and Repinned

The technician removes each cylinder, extracts the existing key pins, and installs a new pin set matched to your new key. The lock housing stays on the door.

  4. New Keys Cut and Tested

New keys are cut on site and tested from both sides of each lock. Old keys are confirmed non-functional. You receive two keys per lock plus any additional copies you request.

THE MECHANICS BEHIND THE SERVICE

How Pin Tumblers Determine Which Key Opens Your Lock

Every standard residential lock contains a cylinder with five or six pin chambers. Each chamber holds two pins stacked on top of each other: a key pin at the bottom and a driver pin above it, pushed down by a small spring. When no key is inserted, the driver pins hang across the shear line and block the cylinder from turning.

When you insert the correct key, each cut on the key lifts its corresponding key pin to a precise height. When every stack aligns so the gap between the key pin and driver pin sits exactly at the shear line, the cylinder rotates and the lock opens. Insert the wrong key, and at least one pin stack sits above or below the shear line, blocking rotation.

Rekeying replaces only the key pins, which are the small lower pins, with a new set cut to a different height sequence. Your old key now lifts each stack to the wrong height. The new key lifts every stack to the correct alignment. The lock housing, deadbolt, and door hardware are untouched. That is why rekeying costs a fraction of replacement: only a few dollars of brass pin stock changes, not the entire mechanism.

  • Same security outcome as new locks at 50 to 70 percent lower cost
  • Non-destructive: lock housing, bolt, and strike plate stay in place
  • Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, and Baldwin keyways serviced on every vehicle
  • Hill Country humidity corrodes older pins: repinning also refreshes worn components

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration inside your existing lock cylinder so your old keys no longer work. The lock hardware stays on the door. Replacing a lock swaps the entire hardware. Rekeying costs 50 to 70 percent less than replacement and takes 10 to 15 minutes per lock. If the lock mechanism is working properly, rekeying gives you the same security outcome at a fraction of the cost.

How does the pin tumbler work, and why does rekeying change which key opens the lock?

A pin tumbler lock has a series of driver pins and key pins stacked in vertical chambers inside the cylinder. Your key lifts each pin stack to a specific height. When all pin stacks align at the shear line simultaneously, the cylinder rotates and the lock opens. Rekeying replaces the key pins with a new set cut to a different height pattern. Your old key lifts them to the wrong heights. Only the new key lifts every stack to the shear line.

Is a landlord required to rekey between tenants in Texas?

Yes. Texas Property Code 92.164 requires landlords to rekey all door locks between tenancies. The landlord must complete rekeying before the new tenant moves in, at the landlord's expense. Failure to comply gives the tenant the right to rekey themselves and deduct the cost from rent. We work with property managers across Austin, Round Rock, and Cedar Park to schedule turnover rekeying between tenant move-outs and move-ins.

Can you rekey all my doors to one key?

Yes. Rekeying to match, where all locks in the home operate on a single key, is our most requested residential service. We can key-alike locks from different manufacturers, including Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale, as long as they share a compatible keyway. Most standard residential locks do. We confirm compatibility when you call.

How long does rekeying take?

Ten to 15 minutes per lock, including cutting new keys on site. A typical three-door home takes 30 to 45 minutes total. We complete most residential rekeying jobs in a single visit. If you have locks with restricted keyways or very old cylinders that need assessment first, add 10 minutes per lock.

What does rekeying cost?

Rekeying runs $75 to $125 per lock, including labor, new pins, and two keys per lock. A three-lock home typically comes to $150 to $250. Volume pricing applies for five or more locks. Compare this to lock replacement, which runs $150 to $350 per lock including hardware. Exact pricing is quoted before any work begins.

Does rekeying work after a break-in?

Only if the lock cylinder itself was not damaged. After a break-in, cylinders are often picked, drilled, or torqued in ways that are not always visible from the outside. Our technician assesses the cylinder on site. If the housing and plug are intact, rekeying is sufficient. If internal damage is found, we recommend replacement. We carry Kwikset, Schlage, and Yale stock on every vehicle for same-visit installation.

Do you serve Georgetown, Pflugerville, and other Austin suburbs?

Yes. From our Central Austin dispatch we cover Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, and 36 Texas markets total. Drive time on I-35 and MoPac is factored into our routing. Call and we confirm your area immediately.
