HOW COMMERCIAL KEY REPLACEMENT WORKS
-
Call and Describe the Order
Tell us the key type (standard, restricted, or high-security), quantity, and whether this is tenant turnover, employee onboarding, or a lost-key situation. We confirm pricing and authorization requirements before dispatch.
-
Authorization Verified
For standard keyways, a business license or facilities management letter is sufficient. For restricted keyways, the key control authorization card must be present. We document the verification method on every order.
-
Technician On Site
Your nearest licensed technician arrives with commercial key-cutting equipment and a full blank inventory for Schlage, Best IC, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Assa Abloy systems. Most Austin commercial sites: same-day service available.
-
Keys Cut and Tested
We cut each key and test it in every applicable lock. For master key systems, we verify the hierarchy: change keys open only assigned locks, sub-masters open their zone, masters open the full system.
-
Key Control Records Updated
We provide an itemized invoice with key types, quantities, authorization method, and date. For restricted systems, we log each key against the manufacturer's control record. One copy for your files, one for ours.
LOST-KEY LIABILITY AND KEY CONTROL
A Lost Restricted Key Is a Liability. A Lost Standard Key Is a Crisis.
When a standard commercial key goes missing, the only secure response is to rekey every lock that key could open. On a 50-door office building in the Domain or the 2nd Street District, that means a day of downtime and several thousand dollars in labor. A restricted keyway eliminates that exposure: the key cannot be duplicated without the authorization card you hold, so a lost key stays lost.
Key control programs work the same way for master key systems. The change key for a single office is low risk. The grand master key that opens every door in a three-building Pflugerville business park is a different problem entirely. We help facilities managers audit who holds which keys, identify gaps in the chain of custody, and recommend the right security tier for each access level.
After tenant turnover on an office lease, we verify that the departing tenant returned all keys before we cut new ones. If they did not, and the building uses a standard keyway, we rekey the suite before cutting new keys for the incoming tenant. Restricted-keyway buildings skip the rekeying cost because the blanks simply cannot be cut elsewhere.
- Restricted-keyway buildings eliminate unauthorized duplication at hardware stores entirely
- Key control audits identify custody gaps before a breach, not after
- Tenant turnover documentation protects property managers from liability disputes
- Itemized key control records satisfy insurance auditors and facility compliance requirements

COMMERCIAL KEY REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS
Can anyone at our company order commercial key replacements?
No. We verify authorization before cutting any commercial key. For standard keyways, a business license, employee badge, or facilities management letter is sufficient. For restricted keyways (Medeco, Schlage Primus, Mul-T-Lock), the person requesting the key must present the original key control authorization card. This protects your business from former employees or contractors ordering keys you did not sanction.
What happens to key control authorization when an employee with restricted keys is terminated?
If you cannot recover the physical key, call us immediately. For restricted keyways, the terminated employee cannot duplicate the key at any hardware store. The key control card stays with your facilities manager, so no blanks can be cut without your approval. If you want to eliminate all risk, we can rekey the affected cylinders on the same visit. We recommend rekeying for terminated employees who had access to sensitive areas.
Do you cut keys for tenant turnover in multi-suite commercial buildings?
Yes. Tenant turnover is one of our most common commercial calls. We coordinate with property managers to verify authorization, check lease terms, and cut replacement keys for incoming tenants or additional keys for new staff. For restricted-keyway buildings, property management authorization replaces the individual tenant's key control card. We document all keys cut and provide an itemized record for your management files.
How do you handle bulk key orders for property management companies?
We schedule a service block for larger orders rather than tying up your facilities manager for a day. For 10 to 25 keys, plan on two hours on site. For 50 or more keys, we can perform key cutting off-site using your key codes and deliver the finished set to your management office. Volume pricing applies at ten keys or more. We provide full documentation for your key control records on every batch.
Can you coordinate commercial key replacement across multiple Austin locations?
Yes. For businesses with two or more Central Texas locations, we schedule a technician route covering all sites in one service day where distances allow. We keep your key system documentation consistent across locations, verify that all keys use the same master key hierarchy if applicable, and provide a single itemized invoice covering all sites. Call and describe your locations and we build the service schedule.
What is the difference between a restricted keyway and a high-security key?
A restricted keyway uses a patented profile that limits where key blanks can be purchased. Only authorized dealers like Pros On Call can obtain the blanks, so a hardware store kiosk physically cannot duplicate the key. High-security keys (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Assa Abloy) add a second layer: the key has angled or rotating pins that resist picking and bump attacks in addition to the duplication restriction. Many businesses start with restricted keyways and upgrade to full high-security when their risk profile justifies the higher cost.
How long does commercial key replacement take for a single key versus a batch?
Single commercial key: 5 to 10 minutes on site. Batch of 10 keys: 30 to 45 minutes. Batch of 50 keys: 2 to 3 hours. Restricted and high-security keys take slightly longer because we verify the authorization card and log each key in the control record before cutting. For orders larger than 25 keys, call ahead so we schedule the right time block and bring sufficient blank inventory.
Is commercial key replacement more expensive than residential?
Standard commercial keyways (Schlage C, Best IC) run $50 to $85 per key because the blanks cost more and authorization verification adds service time. Restricted keyways run $75 to $125 per key. High-security keys (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) run $100 to $175 per key because the blanks are controlled and the cutting tolerances are tighter. Volume orders of 10 or more keys qualify for commercial pricing. All pricing is quoted before any work begins.
