WHEN REPLACEMENT BEATS REPAIR

Three Situations That Mean the Cylinder Needs to Go, Not Just Lubrication.

A lock cylinder that feels stiff on a cold Austin morning often responds to dry graphite lubricant. A cylinder with a worn-down, rounded key slot does not. The internal driver wafers are spring-loaded discs that read the depth cuts on your key. After 80,000 to 120,000 key insertions, those wafers wear flat. The key moves through the cylinder without engaging, and the lock stops turning reliably. No lubricant corrects mechanical wear at that level. Replacement does.

Break-in attempts create a different problem. A thief punching or prying a door cylinder deforms the face plate and frequently bends the internal cam. The lock may still operate with your existing key, but the compromised housing is easier to defeat on the next attempt. The damaged cylinder is also a signal to other opportunists. We replace punch-damaged cylinders same day and can rekey the new cylinder to your existing trunk key so you carry one key for both.

Ignition cylinders wear faster on vehicles parked outdoors in Hill Country heat. The combination of thermal cycling and a keyring heavy with other keys accelerates wafer wear. When the ignition starts requiring two or three rotations to catch, the cylinder is telling you it has about 6 to 12 months left. Most drivers wait until the key stops turning entirely. At that point, the vehicle is immobile and the job is urgent. Replacing the cylinder at the first sign of stiffness avoids that situation entirely.

  • Worn driver wafers replaced, not patched - cylinder operates like new
  • Vandalized cylinders replaced and rekeyed to your existing trunk key on the same visit
  • Ignition cylinder replacement with on-site transponder programming, no dealer trip

AUTOMOTIVE LOCK CYLINDER QUESTIONS

How much does automotive lock cylinder replacement cost?

Door lock cylinder replacement runs $100 to $200 per lock, including parts and installation. Ignition lock cylinder replacement runs $150 to $350, including transponder programming where required. Trunk lock cylinders run $100 to $175. European luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) sit at the higher end because of complex steering column assemblies and OEM-only parts. We quote the exact price before any work begins.

Does ignition cylinder replacement require transponder programming?

Yes, on most vehicles built from 1999 onward. When the ignition cylinder is replaced, the transponder chip must be paired to the vehicle's immobilizer system or the engine will not start even if the key turns. We carry programming equipment for domestic vehicles (Ford, GM, Chrysler) and the majority of Japanese imports (Toyota, Honda, Nissan). Programming takes 15 to 30 minutes and is included in the ignition service quote. Some high-security European systems may require dealer involvement, which we flag during the initial assessment.

Can you come to my location, or do I need to tow my vehicle?

We come to your vehicle. Our mobile units carry the tools and replacement cylinder inventory for most makes. If your door lock cylinder is worn or your trunk lock is damaged, we install the replacement on-site. For ignition cylinder work, we typically need the vehicle stationary. Most Austin and Round Rock jobs are handled in under 90 minutes from arrival without towing.

What if my key broke off inside the ignition cylinder?

Broken-key extraction comes first. We remove the broken blade fragment from the cylinder without forcing the housing or damaging the steering column. If the cylinder was damaged by the break or by a prior extraction attempt, we assess whether replacement is required on the same visit. Do not attempt to pull the fragment with pliers or tape; pushing it deeper significantly raises the extraction difficulty.

My car was broken into and the door lock is damaged. Do you handle vandalism repairs?

Yes. Attempted break-ins frequently punch, drill, or pry the driver-door lock cylinder. Even if the lock still turns, a damaged cylinder is easier to defeat on the next attempt. We replace vandalized cylinders on-site, cut new keys to the replacement, and can rekey the new door cylinder to match your existing trunk lock if you want to keep one key for both. Most break-in damage repairs finish in 45 to 60 minutes.

Do you serve Georgetown, Pflugerville, and the outer Austin suburbs?

Yes. From our Central Austin dispatch we cover Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, and 36 Texas markets total. Median Central Texas response is 14 minutes for scheduled lock installation calls. Call and confirm your area before we dispatch.

Can the new lock cylinder be keyed to match my existing car key?

Yes, in most cases. If your existing key is cut correctly and undamaged, we can source a replacement cylinder to match that cut. Alternatively, we cut new keys to the replacement cylinder and can rekey multiple locks on the same visit so one key operates door, trunk, and glove box. For ignition cylinders, rekeying to an existing key is possible on vehicles without transponder immobilizers; for transponder vehicles, a new key is typically required.
