HOW RESIDENTIAL KEY REPLACEMENT WORKS

  1. Call or Request Online

Tell us what you need: how many keys, which doors or mailboxes, and whether you have an original to copy or need decoding from the lock. We confirm pricing before dispatch.

  2. Technician Arrives

Your nearest licensed technician comes to your home with professional key-cutting equipment and a full blank inventory for Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, and mailbox keyways. Median Central Austin arrival: 14 minutes.

  3. Key Cut or Decoded

If you have an original, we duplicate it directly. If you have no original, we decode the lock cylinder on site and cut a new key from that reading. Takes 3 to 8 minutes per key.

  4. Every Key Tested Before We Leave

We test each new key from both sides of every applicable lock. If any key binds or turns stiff, we recut it on the spot at no charge. You receive working keys, period.

WHY RESIDENTIAL KEY CUTTING IS NOT A KIOSK JOB

The Right Blank Matters. The Right Cut Matters More.

Hardware store kiosks stock roughly 20 to 30 common key blanks and rely on the customer to identify the correct one. A wrong blank cuts a key that looks right and fits the cylinder but lifts the pins to the wrong heights. The lock turns hard, sticks on cold mornings in Hyde Park bungalows, or fails entirely after a few weeks of Austin heat cycling.

Our vehicles carry more than 50 residential blank types, including low-profile mailbox blanks, thick-shank deadbolt blanks for Grade 1 cylinders, and restricted keyway blanks for Medeco and Schlage Primus systems common in newer Barton Hills and Travis Heights homes. We identify the correct blank by inspecting the bow shape, keyway profile, and blade thickness, not by matching what the customer hands us.

For worn keys or situations where no original exists, we decode the existing cylinder on site. A worn key has grooves that have shallowed out over years of daily use. Copying a worn key copies the wear. Decoding from the cylinder returns the correct original depth, the same key you would have had when the lock was new.

  • 50-plus blank types carried: front door, mailbox, garage entry, and restricted keyways
  • Cylinder decoding available when no original key exists
  • Hill Country humidity corrodes standard brass blanks: nickel-silver recommended for outdoor locks
  • Every key tested in the actual lock before we leave the driveway

RESIDENTIAL KEY REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS

How much does residential key replacement cost?

Standard house keys run $25 to $40 per key. Deadbolt cylinder keys with thicker blanks run $30 to $50. Mailbox keys cost $25 to $35. High-security restricted-keyway keys, such as Medeco or Schlage Primus, run $50 to $75 due to the specialized blanks and authorization requirements. Exact pricing is quoted before any work begins.

Can you cut keys when I have no original to copy?

Yes, if we can access the lock or a key code. For deadbolt cylinders, we can decode the existing lock on site and cut a new key from that reading. For mailbox and garage entry locks, cylinder decoding works the same way. We cannot cut from a photo alone. For security reasons we verify ownership before any key-by-code work.

What residential keys do you cut?

We cut front-door and back-door deadbolt keys, Kwikset KW1, Schlage SC1, Yale Y1, and Weiser WR5 keyways. We also cut mailbox keys for private home mailboxes and cluster mailbox units in Austin neighborhoods, garage entry door keys, side-gate keys, and shed padlock keys. High-security keyways including Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage Primus require authorization cards at the time of service.

Should I replace keys or rekey my locks after moving into a new Austin home?

Rekeying all locks is the right move after purchase. Previous owners, real estate agents, and contractors may hold copies of your keys. Rekeying changes the internal pin pattern so old keys stop working immediately, without replacing the hardware. If the locks are worn or outdated, we can replace and key them alike in the same visit. For most Austin homes we see, rekeying is sufficient.

How many spare keys does a typical Austin household need?

For a two-person household, four keys cover daily use with two spares. A family with teenagers or older parents at home needs six to eight. If you have a housesitter, caregiver, or dog-walker, add one per person with regular access. We cut all copies in the same visit and test every key before we leave.

Do you rekey and cut keys in the same visit?

Yes. Most rekeying jobs end with new keys cut on site during the same appointment. If you need all doors keyed alike, front door, back door, and garage entry, we rekey and hand you one master key plus however many duplicates you need. Call and tell us the lock count beforehand so we bring the right cylinder kits.

Do you serve Georgetown, Cedar Park, and other Austin suburbs?

Yes. From our Central Austin dispatch we cover Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Kyle, Buda, and San Marcos regularly. We serve 36 Texas markets total. Median Central Texas response is 14 minutes. Call and we confirm your area immediately.

Is the technician cutting my keys licensed?

Yes. Texas DPS Locksmith License #B19847. Every technician is employed by and insured through Pros On Call. We carry the license and can show it at the door before any work begins.
