HOW DEADBOLT INSTALLATION WORKS

  1. Call or Request Online

Tell us the door count, deadbolt type preferred, and your Austin address. We confirm stock availability and arrival time.

  2. Technician Dispatched

Your nearest licensed technician arrives with Kwikset, Schlage, and Yale Grade 1 inventory plus all drilling and reinforcement hardware. Median Central Austin arrival: 14 minutes.

  3. Door and Frame Assessment

We measure door thickness (standard 1-3/4 inch or thick 2 inch), check existing hole prep, and inspect the door frame for strike plate reinforcement needs.

  4. Deadbolt Installed and Secured

Cylinder seated, bolt aligned, and a security-grade strike plate installed with 3-inch screws reaching into the framing studs - not just door trim.

  5. Full Test and Handoff

We lock and unlock from both sides 10 times, confirm smooth operation and full bolt extension, and hand you two keys. Smart locks: app pairing completed before we leave.

THE DETAIL MOST INSTALLERS SKIP

The Strike Plate Is Half the Security

A Grade 1 deadbolt on a weak strike plate is a false sense of security. Standard builder-grade strike plates come with two 3/4-inch screws that anchor only to door trim, not the structural framing. A hard kick pulls the trim away from the frame regardless of what lock brand you have. We see this failure mode constantly in older Hyde Park bungalows and newer Mueller townhomes alike.

Every deadbolt installation we complete includes a security-grade strike plate - minimum 3 inches tall - set with 3-inch screws that penetrate the door jamb and reach the solid wood framing studs behind the wall. For doors in high-priority locations, we also carry box strike plates that enclose the bolt on three sides, making lever-based prying nearly impossible. The strike plate is quoted and installed in the same visit, same price.

  • Security strike plate with 3-inch framing screws, standard on every job
  • Box strike plate option for doors under active threat
  • Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, Baldwin hardware carried on every vehicle
  • 90-day workmanship warranty on all installations

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

Showed up fast, had the Schlage Grade 1 I asked about already on the truck. He swapped out both front and back deadbolts and keyed them alike. The whole job took under an hour. No drama, no upsell.

DEADBOLT INSTALLATION QUESTIONS

What is the difference between ANSI Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 deadbolts?

ANSI/BHMA grades measure a deadbolt's resistance to forced entry and durability. Grade 1 withstands 10 strikes at 75 lbs of force and 800,000 lock cycles - the highest residential rating. Grade 2 handles 5 strikes and 400,000 cycles. Grade 3 (builder-grade) handles only 2 strikes and 200,000 cycles. For exterior doors, we recommend Grade 1 from brands like Schlage B60 series or Kwikset 980.

Single-cylinder or double-cylinder deadbolt - which is right for my door?

Single-cylinder (key outside, thumb-turn inside) works for most Austin homes with solid doors. Choose double-cylinder (key on both sides) only when glass panels sit within 40 inches of the lock - a burglar who breaks the glass cannot reach through to turn a thumb-turn. Note: Texas fire codes allow double-cylinder use, but keep a key accessible near the door for emergency exit.

How long does deadbolt installation take?

Replacing an existing deadbolt in a pre-drilled door: 30 to 45 minutes. Installing a deadbolt in a new hole: 60 to 90 minutes including drilling and chiseling the mortise. Smart deadbolt installation adds 15 to 30 minutes for app pairing and user code setup. Most Austin jobs are completed in a single visit.

Do you supply the deadbolt hardware, or do I buy it myself?

We carry Kwikset, Schlage, and Yale stock in Grade 1 and Grade 2 on every vehicle. You can select from our inventory on site, or we install a lock you purchased. If you buy your own, verify it is ANSI Grade 1 and confirm the finish matches your existing hardware before we arrive.

What does deadbolt installation cost in Austin?

Labor runs $75 to $150 per door depending on whether we drill new holes or use existing prep. Hardware from our stock adds $30 to $150 for mechanical deadbolts and $150 to $400 for smart locks. A complete package - Grade 1 Schlage deadbolt, reinforced security strike plate, and professional installation - typically runs $150 to $280 total. Exact quote provided before work begins.

Can you key multiple new deadbolts alike so one key opens all doors?

Yes. When installing deadbolts on multiple doors in the same visit, we key them alike during installation. One key for the front door, back door, and any other entry. For rental properties or buildings with multiple units, we can also set up master-key systems. Tell us when you call so we bring the right cylinder inventory.

Do you serve Round Rock, Cedar Park, and other Austin suburbs?

Yes. From our Central Austin dispatch we cover Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, Bastrop, and all 36 Texas markets we serve. Drive time on I-35 and MoPac is factored into dispatch routing. Call and we confirm your area and estimated arrival.

Is the technician who installs my deadbolt licensed?

Yes. Texas DPS Locksmith License #B19847. Every technician dispatched carries that license and is employed by and insured through Pros On Call. We show the license on request at every job site.
