HOW AUTOMOTIVE KEY REPLACEMENT WORKS

  1. Call with Year, Make, and Model

We confirm your vehicle is covered, quote the price, and dispatch your nearest licensed technician. No need to tow your car anywhere.

  2. Technician Arrives On-Site

We come to your parking lot, driveway, or roadside location with a key-cutting machine, programming hardware, and blank inventory for your vehicle. Median Central Texas arrival: 14 minutes.

  3. Key Blade Cut to Factory Spec

Using your VIN, we look up the original factory key code and cut a new blade to manufacturer tolerances. Ownership verification required: registration, title, or insurance card.

  4. Transponder Programmed and Tested

For chip keys and smart keys, we program the transponder to your vehicle's immobilizer so the engine starts. We test ignition start and door locks before we leave.

KEY CUTTING VS. KEY PROGRAMMING

Two Steps in One Visit. Both Are Required for 1995 and Newer Vehicles.

Key cutting is the physical step: a precision machine mills a new blade to the exact depth cuts your ignition and door cylinders require. Without the correct blade, the key does not turn. Key programming is the electronic step: a diagnostic tool writes the transponder chip's unique code to your vehicle's engine control module so the immobilizer recognizes the new key and permits the engine to start. Without programming, the blade may turn the ignition switch but the engine will not run.

Pre-1995 vehicles used no transponder system, so key cutting alone is sufficient. From roughly 1995 onward, federal theft-reduction standards pushed manufacturers to add immobilizers. By 2000, virtually every vehicle on Texas roads had one. Proximity smart keys, common on 2010 and newer vehicles, add a third layer: keyless entry and push-button start that communicate via radio frequency. Our mobile units carry the programming hardware for all three generations.

Hill Country heat can accelerate wear on key blanks left on a dashboard. If the cuts on your remaining spare look shallow or the ignition feels stiff on hot Austin afternoons, we recommend cutting fresh copies before you lose the last working key entirely.

  • Key cutting and transponder programming handled in a single on-site visit
  • Factory key codes accessed via VIN - no original key required to get started
  • Broken-key extraction from ignition cylinder before replacement when needed
  • Spare keys cut on the same visit at a reduced per-key cost

AUTOMOTIVE KEY REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS

What is the difference between key cutting and key programming?

Key cutting shapes the physical blade so it fits your ignition and door locks. Key programming pairs the transponder chip inside the key to your vehicle's immobilizer computer so the engine will start. Both steps are required for vehicles with transponder or smart-key systems. We handle both in a single visit. For pre-1995 vehicles with no chip, cutting alone is sufficient.

Can you make a car key when I have lost every copy?

Yes. We do not need an existing key to copy from. Using your vehicle identification number, visible through the windshield, we look up the original factory key code from manufacturer databases, cut a new blade to those specifications, and then program the transponder chip to your vehicle's immobilizer system. Proof of ownership is required: registration, title, or insurance card showing your name and the VIN.

How much does automotive key replacement cost compared to a dealership?

Our on-site rate for transponder key replacement runs $100 to $300 depending on key type and vehicle. Dealerships typically charge $200 to $600 for the same service, plus $150 to $350 for the tow to get your car there if you have no working key. Most drivers save 30 to 60 percent by calling us instead, and they avoid the tow entirely.

What vehicle years and makes do you cover?

We cover all makes and models 1995 and newer, including domestic (Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep, GMC), Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru), European (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo), and Korean (Hyundai, Kia). Most 1981 to 1994 vehicles with no transponder chip are also handled with a straight metal key cut. Call us with your year, make, and model and we confirm coverage before dispatch.

Can you help if my key broke off in the ignition?

Yes. Broken-key extraction is a separate step before replacement. We remove the broken blade fragment from the ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder, then cut and program a new key. If the ignition cylinder itself was damaged by the break, we assess whether it needs replacement on the same visit. Do not attempt to pull a broken key with pliers or tape; that typically pushes it deeper and makes extraction harder.

How long does automotive key replacement take on-site?

A standard transponder key: 30 to 60 minutes from arrival. A smart key or proximity fob: 60 to 90 minutes. A basic metal key for an older vehicle: 15 to 30 minutes. Time covers driving to your location, key code lookup, blade cutting, transponder programming, and testing both ignition start and door locks. Most jobs finish in one visit.

Do you serve Round Rock, Cedar Park, and surrounding Austin suburbs?

Yes. From our Central Austin dispatch we cover Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, and 36 Texas markets total. Median Central Texas response is 14 minutes. If you are stuck in a parking lot on MoPac or I-35, we route the nearest technician to you. Call and we confirm your area immediately.
