Copy of a Copy: How Tolerance Stacks Up Over Generations

A duplicate cut from an already-duplicated key inherits every small inaccuracy the first copy had, then adds its own on top. Trade sources describe the resulting wear and fit problems becoming noticeable after roughly five generations of copying a copy, which is the mechanical reason a spare of a spare of a spare eventually stops turning smoothly, even when each individual copy looked fine at the counter.

Proximity Fobs and Smart Keys: Why "Copy" Is the Wrong Verb
