READING YOUR LIFTMASTER'S DIAGNOSTIC DISPLAY
The Two-Digit Code Tells a Technician What Failed Before We Arrive
LiftMaster's control board display groups faults into three ranges. Codes 31 to 59 cover system and accessory faults: control board, transformer, and wiring-level issues. Codes 60 to 83 cover external entrapment protection devices, the photo eyes and edge sensors that UL 325 requires the operator to monitor on every cycle. Codes 91 to 92 cover the operator's own inherent force limiting, the built-in resistance sensing that stops or reverses the gate on an obstruction. LA400-generation units that predate the digital display use a separate LED blink-count chart instead, where each blink count maps to its own fault rather than to the numeric code ranges above.
Code 70, a close-side photo eye interrupted, is the single most common code across the LA and CSW lines. The overwhelming majority of the time the fix is cleaning or realigning the lens, not replacing a part, since dust, spider webs, and morning dew all read as an obstruction to the sensor. Photographing the display before any power cycle matters because a reset clears the code history the technician needs; the display only holds the last 20 stored events.
- Codes 31 to 59: system and accessory faults, control board and wiring level
- Codes 60 to 83: external entrapment devices, photo eyes and edge sensors
- Codes 91 to 92: inherent force limiting, the operator's built-in obstruction sensing
20 Events
The diagnostic display stores and cycles through the last 20 fault events

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do the flashing lights or beeps on my LiftMaster gate opener mean?
LiftMaster gate operators report faults through a two-digit diagnostic code on the control board display: codes 31 to 59 cover system and accessory faults, 60 to 83 cover external entrapment protection devices like photo eyes and edge sensors, and 91 to 92 cover the operator's own inherent force limiting. Older LA400-generation units without a display use LED blink counts instead of a code. Either way, the code or blink count points a technician straight to the failed component instead of guessing.
What does LiftMaster error code 70 mean?
Code 70 means the close-side photo eye was interrupted, and it is by far the most common code on LiftMaster gate operators. The overwhelming majority of the time the cause is a dirty or misaligned lens, not a failed part: dust, spider webs, morning dew, or a sensor knocked slightly out of alignment blocks the beam and the operator refuses to close as its safety response. Clean both lenses, confirm the alignment indicator LEDs are lit solid, and power cycle. If code 70 persists after that, the sensor or its wiring needs replacing.
How do I reset my LiftMaster gate opener?
Power the unit down at the breaker or disconnect, wait about 30 seconds, then restore power and run a full open-close cycle to confirm the operator relearns its travel limits correctly. Do not bypass, jumper, or disconnect an external entrapment protection sensor to force a reset. UL 325 requires every external sensor to be monitored on each cycle, and defeating that monitoring is both a safety violation and a code violation on any operator manufactured since January 2016. If a reset does not clear the fault, the underlying component needs diagnosis, not a workaround.
How much does LiftMaster gate opener repair cost compared to other brands?
Professional-grade control boards, the class LiftMaster and DoorKing both build, run toward the higher end of the control-board repair band, generally $135 to $400 installed versus the low end of that range on a budget DIY-brand board. LiftMaster commercial operators like the CSW24UL and SL3000UL also cost more upfront than DIY-brand hardware, because they are built for continuous-duty cycling that a big-box operator is not rated for. The premium buys duty-cycle life and parts availability, which matters most on a gate that opens dozens of times a day.
Do you service Katy and Pasadena for LiftMaster gate repair?
Yes. We dispatch LiftMaster-trained technicians across Katy, Pasadena, and the greater Houston metro, alongside statewide coverage across all 36 Texas cities we serve. Call (888) 601-6005 and we confirm your area and the next available window immediately.
My LiftMaster gate's diagnostic display shows a code I don't recognize, is that an emergency?
Photograph the display before power cycling the operator. A reset can clear the stored event history a technician needs to diagnose the fault correctly, and the display only holds the last 20 events. If the code repeats after a reset, or the gate is stuck in a position that blocks a driveway or exposes the property, call for diagnosis rather than continuing to cycle the operator.
Is Pros On Call an authorized LiftMaster dealer?
No. Pros On Call repairs and installs LiftMaster gate operators as an independent service company. We are not LiftMaster, Chamberlain Group, or a factory-authorized LiftMaster dealer unless a specific job states otherwise. We carry parts for the LA and CSW lines and diagnose LiftMaster equipment directly, the same way an independent auto shop services a car brand without being a factory dealership.
