THE CASE FOR KEYPAD

A Key Can Be Copied in 90 Seconds at Any Hardware Store.

Physical keys rely on possession. Anyone who had your key long enough to press it into clay can open the door. A PIN code works only for the person who knows it. When that person leaves, deactivating the code takes seconds and leaves every other user unaffected.

For vacation rental hosts in Austin, that means no more counting keys at checkout or paying a locksmith after a guest fails to return them. Hyde Park landlords put Yale Assure keypads on every unit: move-in day gets a new code, move-out day deletes it. No rekey required.

  • Vacation rentals: guest code auto-expires at checkout
  • Rentals: code change instead of rekey at tenant turnover
  • Caregiver access without hiding a key under the mat
  • Contractor codes that stop working at end of job, automatically

KEYPAD ENTRY FAQ

How many codes can a residential keypad store?

Battery-powered residential keypads typically store 20 to 100 unique codes. That is enough for a family, a cleaning crew, a regular contractor, and a handful of neighbors. For vacation rentals where you cycle through guests weekly, 100 codes is more than sufficient since unused codes can be deleted at any time. If you need more than 100 concurrent codes, a networked commercial system is the right tool.

Can I set a temporary code for a contractor or delivery?

Yes. Most Wi-Fi-connected residential keypads generate temporary codes that expire after a set number of uses or at a specific date and time. A plumber can have a code that works only between 8 AM and 5 PM on Tuesday. An Airbnb guest gets a code that deactivates at checkout time. Purely mechanical PIN keypads store fixed codes that require manual deletion, so they are better suited for permanent household members than temporary visitors.

Will the keypad work during a power outage?

Battery-powered residential keypads are unaffected by power outages. They operate entirely on internal batteries and do not require a wired connection. Hardwired keypads on a garage gate or commercial door include battery backup circuits rated for 4 to 24 hours of normal operation so entry continues even when grid power fails.

What is the difference between a keypad and a smart lock?

A standalone keypad handles entry by PIN code only. A smart lock adds wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or Matter) for remote app control, activity logs pushed to your phone, and integration with home automation systems. Standalone keypads cost less, need no app, and have simpler battery life. Smart locks cost more but let you lock or unlock from anywhere and see who entered and when. We install both and can help you decide which fits your door and use case.

How hard is it to change the codes myself after installation?

Standard battery keypads use a simple programming sequence: master code plus a 2-button command to add or delete user codes. We leave you a written instruction card and walk you through it before we go. Wi-Fi keypads manage codes through their smartphone app, which is straightforward once the initial setup is complete. Most homeowners handle code changes on their own after the first day.

Can a keypad replace my deadbolt, or do I need both?

A motorized electronic deadbolt keypad replaces your existing deadbolt entirely. It looks like a standard lock from the outside, has no visible keypad until illuminated, and is ANSI Grade 1 or Grade 2 rated. A secondary keypad wired to an existing electric strike is an add-on, not a replacement. We assess your door setup and recommend which approach fits your frame, door material, and security goals.

Do outdoor keypads hold up to Texas weather?

Quality outdoor keypads carry IP55 to IP67 weatherproof ratings, UV-resistant housing, and are rated to operate from -22 F to 150 F. Texas summers push outdoor surface temps well past ambient air temperature. We spec weather-rated units for any exterior installation and have not had a weather-related failure on a properly-rated unit in 15 years of Texas service.

Do you service keypads you did not install?

Yes. We service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Lockey, Trilogy (Alarm Lock), and most other residential and light-commercial keypad brands. Call (888) 601-6005 with the brand and model number and we confirm parts availability before scheduling.
