REAL-WORLD USE

Vacation rentals. Family homes. Small offices.

Mueller homeowners install Schlage Encode so their dog walker has a Tuesday-Thursday code that expires automatically. Hyde Park landlords put Yale Assure on every unit so tenants get unique codes on move-in day and codes disappear the morning after move-out. Round Rock Airbnb hosts set per-guest codes from their phone the moment a booking confirms.

Small offices in East Austin are the other common call. A real estate brokerage with five agents does not need a commercial card system. A Kwikset Halo with 250-code capacity and time-zone schedules handles their access control at a fraction of the cost.

  • Vacation rentals: unique per-guest code, auto-expire on checkout
  • Multi-unit properties: tenant code management from one app
  • Caregiver access for elderly parents without hiding a physical key
  • Remote unlock for delivery or service contractors while you are at work

SMART LOCK FAQ

What is the difference between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and Matter smart locks?

Wi-Fi locks connect directly to your router for remote access with no hub required, but draw more battery. Bluetooth-only locks work within 30 feet without a hub, offering strong privacy but no remote unlock. Z-Wave locks use a mesh radio protocol requiring a compatible hub, with longer battery life and deeper home automation integration. Matter is a 2023 cross-platform standard that works with Apple, Google, and Amazon simultaneously. For vacation rentals or remote access, choose Wi-Fi or Matter. For home automation, Z-Wave or Matter. For simple local-only keyless entry, Bluetooth-only is enough.

Will my smart lock still work if the Wi-Fi goes down?

Yes. Smart locks store PIN codes and schedules locally. Anyone at the door can still enter with their assigned code or physical key backup. You lose remote unlock capability and activity log uploads until Wi-Fi reconnects. Z-Wave and Bluetooth locks are unaffected because they do not rely on your home network.

Which brands do you install for vacation rentals and Airbnb properties?

Schlage Encode, Yale Assure Lock 2, and Kwikset Halo are the most requested for short-term rentals in Austin. All three support unique per-guest codes, scheduled expiration, and remote management from out of town. Yale Assure integrates directly with the August platform, which connects to some Airbnb management tools. We configure the app, program initial codes, and walk property managers through remote code generation before we leave.

Can a smart lock be hacked?

Reputable brands use AES-128 or AES-256 encryption and require two-factor authentication. The practical attack surface is weak Wi-Fi passwords and reused app credentials, not the lock hardware itself. We recommend a dedicated IoT network segment, two-factor on the lock app, and firmware auto-update enabled. Level Lock and Schlage Encode Plus use Thread, which communicates peer-to-peer without cloud relay for additional privacy.

How long does a professional smart lock installation take?

Most single-door installations take 60 to 90 minutes. That includes removing the existing deadbolt, fitting the new hardware, routing the Wi-Fi or Z-Wave pairing, programming user codes, and testing every entry method. Properties with hollow-core doors or non-standard bore holes may require additional prep time, which we quote before starting.

What is Matter and should I wait for it before buying?

Matter is an open connectivity standard adopted in 2022 by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung. A Matter-enabled lock works across all four ecosystems without separate hub requirements or platform lock-in. Yale Assure Lock 2 with the Matter module and Schlage Encode Plus support it today. If you run a mixed Apple-and-Google home or plan to switch platforms, Matter is worth the modest price premium. If you use a single ecosystem, a standard Wi-Fi lock delivers the same daily experience at a lower cost.

Do you service smart locks you did not install?

Yes. We diagnose connectivity issues, replace failing components, reprogram codes, and assist with app configuration on Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, August, and Level locks regardless of installation origin. Call (888) 601-6005 and describe the brand and symptom.

What is the battery life on common smart locks?

Wi-Fi locks draw more power: Schlage Encode runs 6 to 12 months on four AA batteries. Kwikset Halo is similar. Yale Assure Lock 2 runs 8 to 12 months. August Wi-Fi runs 3 to 6 months due to its constant-connection radio. Z-Wave and Bluetooth-only locks typically last 12 to 24 months. All models send a low-battery alert via the app 2 to 4 weeks before depletion.
